Mondaine compacts were made by premier Swiss watch makers, in the 30’s era. They were known for their originality and quality workmanship. This is one of their ‘book’ compacts as it was made to look like a fine leather volume in a grand library. The cover is tooled leather in red, black, and tan. The back cover is black. The spine of the book has the Mondaine logo and the metal is ridged to look like the pages of a book. There are two compartments. The top opens to a mirror, a rouge well with a whole rouge cake, and a covered powder well, which is empty. Both of the Mondaine signature pink puffs with an open braided flower are with the compact. The push bar opens the larger compartment which possibly was for cigarettes at the time. Now it would be useful for money or tissues. The compact measures 3” by 2”. The outside of the compact has a few worn spots in the leather but still very nice. The inside mirror has clouded and discolored, but is not cracked. The rest of that compartment is in really nice condition. The inside of the larger compartment has some oxidation. The lid has etched scrollwork and the Mondaine logo. For a compact from the 30’s the overall condition is is very, very good. There are some Mondaine compacts out there, but compared to other brands, not a large lot. Also, one in this leather book form, in this nice condition, is not that easy to find either. A really nice addition to your collection.
