Rare mid-1930s ART DECO FRANCES DENNEY compact from the Philadelphia Denney salon. Beautiful wave engraving inside and on the bottom. Very good condition and clean.
Elegant concentric patterns of very fine engraving.
The wave pattern reminds of Omega Watch Co's. diving watches (but Denney did it better). Nice contrasts on the black face. The Denney & Denney Co. and Frances Denney stories are interesting. Check them out on-line.
Measures 1 7/8ths inches across by 1/2 of an inch thick. The closure snaps shut with authority. It opens smoothly and easily with a touch of the exterior button. The mirror is in very good condition with a light amount of age spotting (not a distracting amount).
No cracks or weak spots. There is a very light overall patina, on the metals, with a few minute spots of gray tarnish. The black surface, of the face, has some light scuffs commensurate with age and use.
There are two (1/64th of an inch) nicks in the black face edge at the 4 o'clock position. A pencil-tip size piece, of errant black, is in one of the gold dots at that position. The interior is clean and brilliant. It has a faint, sweet, powder smell.
This lovely and unique compact is clean, bright and ready for it's next 80 years of service.
