  • Condition: The antique spittoon is in good used condition given its age and utilitarian function. The piece has no breaks, losses, or repairs. It does have general pitting most likely from use and has scratches as well as some dings to the exterior. The piece was obviously cleaned by the previous owner and truly looks very good. A similar piece with the same mark but having three feet to stand on can be seen on The Henry Ford Museum website. The piece is all original with no breaks or repairs. The is still a bit soiled and would benefit from a good cleaning, but we leave that to the discretion of the new owner. A nice old piece worthy of a spot in your collection.     Description:
    Antique pewter circular spittoon having a funnel-shaped lid made by William Savage Active in Middletown, Connecticut, USA in the period 1837-1840. The cuspidor is with a flat base and shaped sides rising inwards to a flat top on which a funnel-shaped lid with a central hole sits. The piece has a finger loop applied to the side to be carried from. The piece has the mark of William Savage of Middletown, Connecticut stamped in the center of the base. The piece comes with a small tag having the information about the maker made by the previous owner (see last photo). The piece is in very good condition given it is almost 200 years old. It has no breaks, losses, or repairs. It does have general pitting most likely from use and has scratches as well as some dings to the exterior. The piece was obviously cleaned by the previous owner and truly looks very good. Please carefully review the photos as they are part and parcel of our description.

    Uncertain but most likely in the late 1830 (1837-1840).
    Origin:
    Purchased at an estate sale in southeastern Pennsylvania. The piece was made in Middletown, Connecticut.
    Size:
    Measures ~8 1/4" in diameter at the base, ~61/4" in diameter at the top, is ~8 5/8" at its widest including the finger loop, and is ~2 1/2" high. The piece weighs about one pound and 14 ounces.

    Stamped on the bottom with the name "SAVAGE" in curved fashion and then marked MIDD CT. below it. See photos for details.
